What is the Food To You Mobile Food Pantry?

Food To You Mobile Food Pantry is a way to get groceries and household items to those who need them on a weekly basis by distributing them in the neighborhoods after daytime work hours.

The Mobile Food Pantry is sponsored as a service in the Sioux Falls area by Charis Minisry Partners, a non-profit organization of thirteen local congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

What is the purpose of the Food To You Mobile Food Pantry?

  • To provide a supplement to existing food assistance in the Sioux Falls area in order to decrease hunger and poverty through greater availability of food and household items.
  • To assist the public in building caring relationships with neighbors served through this program.
  • To express the Christian value of serving and working in respect and partnership with all parts of the community, both those served and those being served.

How does Food To You work?

The Mobile Food Pantry, with truck, driver, and supplies from the South Dakota Food Bank, will be on the go on Thursdays to offer a distribution of groceries and personal products from 6:00 – 7:00pm at the following sites:

  • First Thursday – East Side Lutheran Church, 1300 East 10th Street
  • Second Thursday – Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church, 5001 East Madison Street
  • Third Thursday – Augustana Lutheran Church, 235 North Prairie
  • Fourth Thursday – St. John Lutheran Church, 1912 West 13th Street
  • Fifth Thursday – No Distributions offered at any site.

No Food Vouchers or proof of income will be required, but those using Food To You can access this service only once a month.

How can I get on board with Food To You?

VOLUNTEER GROUPS from organizations, churches, and businesses, or family and friends are needed to sponsor and provide workers for each weekly food distribution.  Volunteers come early on the Thursday they are scheduled to help to be trained by the Food To You Coordinator, set up the area, unload and arrange items, and interact with clients as they conduct the distribution. Here is what is needed from each group:

  • About sixteen-twenty able-bodied volunteers, including some who are able to lift and carry boxes, are to arrive at the site by 5:15pm at the latest. Some of the volunteers may be responsible youth who are in 6th grade or older. No elementary children, please. Four or five of the volunteers who can help with truck unloading and staging of supplies are to be at the site by 4:30pm at the latest. The distribution takes place from 6:00- 7:00pm with volunteers able to leave by 8:00pm.
  • A donation of $250 - $300 from the volunteer group sponsoring each week’s distribution is requested to cover the expense of the food purchased from the SD Food Bank as well as the cost of the Food Bank truck and driver for that evening.
  • A donation of a particular food item chosen by Food To You is requested for the distribution the group serves. Groups will be asked to collect and bring a large number of a single assigned item.
  • Items that will be distributed during the upcoming months are shown in the upper right column on this page and in the lower right column of this site's home page.

Any individual or group is welcome to collect and donate the Food of the Month. These items need to be brought to East Side Lutheran Church or to the distribution site if prearranged with the Coordinator.  The month listed is the month the food will be distributed so it is best to collect items in advance of the month they are needed.  Watch the website for upcoming Food of the Month items and contact the Coordinator with questions.

At this time Food To You is unable to accept donations of any food items other than those chosen for each distribution. No other food items can be accepted.  Please donate them to the Food Pantry.

Any individual or group is welcome to collect and assemble HYGIENE PACKS for Food to You to offer to the clients at the weekly distributions.  A Hygiene Pack is to be made up in this way:

•  One large roll of toilet paper

•  One bar of soap

•  One bottle of shampoo OR one large tube of toothpaste

Place the three items in a clear gallon plastic bag and fasten securely with either a twist tie or ziplock.  Only three items to a bag please.  No loose items or packs made with different items can be accepted.  Drop off any time at East Side Lutheran Church or contact the Coordinator for assistance.

Also needed at any time are...

donations of large rolls of TOILET PAPER. When it is not possible to hand out full hygiene packs to Food To You guests, a few rolls of toilet paper are given accourding to their household size.

Please contact the coordinator prior to making a delivery of either hygiene packs or toilet paper to find out where and when to drop off items.

Thanks to all who help provide these much-needed items for the Food To You guests. (None of these items are purchasable with food stamps/EBT cards.)

SUPPORTING DONATIONS are especially welcome as the Food To You Mobile Food Pantry starts up in the Spring of 2009. A great partnership with the South Dakota Food Bank and the other area organizations, services, and churches has enabled Charis Ministry Partners to begin this program to decrease hunger and increase caring in our community. A part-time Coordinator, Karen Soli, has started work in order to launch Food To You at this time of growing need. General financial donations to Charis Ministry Partners for Food To You are welcome to under gird this largely volunteer program and are fully tax deductible.

Food To You is now collecting:

Pasta

Pasta:

for distribution in March.

Please turn in donations prior to March 1st if possible.

NOW DISTRIBUTING:

Hearty Soup

These are the items that volunteers are asked to collect and bring when their group volunteers. Others are welcome to donate as well. Contact Coordinator for delivery instructions.

April Food Item:

Cereal

Please try to collect and deliver these items prior to the second Thursday of the month in which they are being distributed so they can get to those who need them.

To all Charis Ministry Partner Congregations, Members, and Friends:

Greetings and God’s grace to you this beautiful fall season!

Here’s an update on this important work that we do together. There is both good news and some challenges. Thank you so much to all who help serve our neighbors in need in the Sioux Falls area. Here is a summary of news for this fall:

The number of guests served at both Food to You and Necessities for Neighbors has increased in the last several months. Necessities for Neighbors is now serving close to 250 families at each distribution at Peace. At Food to You our numbers of families served in the months of June-September went up by 24% from the same months in 2010. We averaged 444 households served at each distribution in the past four months. Usage has dropped somewhat since school started with lunches, breakfasts, backpacks, etc. available, but is still higher than last year.

The number of guests served at both Food to You and Necessities for Neighbors has increased in the last several months. (Necessities for Neighbors gives out laundry soap, feminine hygiene products, diapers and wipes, and toilet paper the first Sunday of each month at Peace Lutheran Church.) They are now serving close to 250 families at each month’s distribution. At Food to You our numbers of families served in the months of June-September went up by 24% from the same months in 2010. We averaged 444 households served at each distribution. Usage has dropped somewhat since school started with lunches, breakfasts, backpacks, etc. available, but is still higher than last year.

Charis Ministry Partners, the parent organization for both of these programs, has received a sales tax exemption license from the State of South Dakota. Any purchases made for either program will be exempt from state sales tax because we applied and qualified as a non-profit relief organization.

A recent raise in transportation and handling costs from Feeding South Dakota has strained our capacity to procure groceries for Food to You distributions. Thanks to groups who have sponsored/volunteered lately and donated the newly suggested amount of $250-300. This helps a great deal.

During late August and most of September we have had little or no government commodities to distribute (TEFAP). This has reduced the amount of food we are able to give by about half at each distribution. We have spent more to order off the food bank’s purchase menu to fill in the gap so that our guests can get close to 20 pounds of food each time. This situation took place at the end of the fiscal year for the TEFAP program at the state and federal level. The commodities are now available, but only a few categories. Please check out the front page article in the Argus Leader, Monday, October 10, “High Prices Put Strain on Food Aid for Needy,” for excellent information about this problem.

Food to You has recently been blessed by a collaboration of efforts between Rejoice! Lutheran Church and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Items were purchased and assembled for over 800 hygiene packs! This is a great help as we distribute these to families every other month. Sioux Falls Christian Elementary has taken on collecting and donating hygiene packs for their service project for the 2011-12 school year – the second time they have done this. Our ability to care for our community becomes possible through these kinds of gifts. Thanks to all who donate both hygiene and food of the month items, in whatever quantity they are needed and appreciated by our guests.

Here are some ways you can help the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry this fall:

Be sure to remind the hunters you know to consider donating game through the Sportsmen against Hunger Program. Food to You is a recipient of this ground meat when it becomes available. It usually is distributed through Feeding South Dakota to FTY. Any locker that processes wild game can tell hunters how to go about this.

Conduct a toilet paper or special food of the month collection for a period of time or with a particular group or event in your organization. We now distribute just toilet paper every other month (rather than hygiene packs) and are always in need of this. Remember to collect the items at least month ahead of when they are distributed. Please email me for delivery plans.

Sign up with Pastor Ann Rosendale at Peace Lutheran to sponsor a Necessities for Neighbors distribution held on the first Sunday of every month. You may collect one or more of the needed items – laundry soap, diapers & wipes, feminine hygiene products, and toilet paper – for that day. You may also provide a few volunteers.

One more reminder – it’s time to sign up to sponsor/volunteer for a Food to You distribution in January, February, March, and beyond. The dates are already starting to fill. Thank you to all who are partners in this important effort to care for those in need in our community.
